Stephen Watkins Cert Ed, MIfL

Stephen Watkins started at sea in 1980 as a Deck Trainee and took his Deck Officer’s exams at the Merchant Navy College, Greenhithe in 1984. He sailed as 2nd Mate for a couple of years before moving ashore. After three years in retail management with Tesco Plc, he joined the National Sea Training College (NSTC) at Gravesend as Nautical Instructor, teaching safety and seamanship to Pre-Sea Trainees. In 1996 Stephen became a Lecturer following the merger of NSTC with North West Kent College (NWKC). During his time in education and training he has completed a Certificate in Education with Greenwich University, is an NVQ Assessor, holds the Internal Verifier Award, and has an ILM Certificate and an ILM Diploma, both in Management. He is delighted to be supporting students working towards the Diploma in Logistics Management.

Alan Rushton’s initial career in transport and supply began in the chemicals industry with ISR Ltd and Rio Tinto Zinc. After successful completion of a Masters degree in Transport Studies, he worked for several years as a Research Officer and Senior Consultant for the National Materials Handling Centre. Consultancy projects were undertaken for many blue chip companies, including Dow Chemicals, Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Barclays Bank, Coca Cola Schweppes, Christian Salvesen, Ciba Geigy, Panasonic, Motorola. Alan was involved in the creation of the first European Masters programme in Logistics and the Supply Chain at Cranfield University – initially, the MSc in Distribution Technology and Management and subsequently became Head of the Distribution Studies Unit and Director of Studies for the MSc in 1986. From 1991 to 2005 he was the Director of Graduate Programmes for the Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Cranfield University. His teaching specialisms include supply chain strategy, logistics network design, logistics outsourcing, freight transport planning and customer service. In recent years, has led the development and use of eLearning in the Cranfield School of Management, and has written a number of eLearning self-teaching modules in Transport and Logistics. Director of Dialog Consultants Ltd, a consultancy specialising in distribution and logistics, since its inception in 1985. Has continued to undertake consultancy work in transport, distribution, logistics and supply chain planning and management. In addition to his research and consultancy experience in transport and logistics, Alan has lectured both nationally and internationally and has published widely in these and associated areas. He is also co-author of the Handbook of Logistics and Distribution Management. The third edition was published in May 2006.

Khalid Bichou

Dr Khalid Bichou is a transport logistics and port consultant and is the co-founder of the Port Operations Research and Technology Centre (PORTeC) at Imperial College London. He has over 17 years of international experience in the port, maritime, transport and logistics industries including periods in senior positions and as Consultant and Adviser to global operators, financial institutions, governments and international agencies. His expertise spans port and maritime operations, transport economics and infrastructure, freight and distribution logistics, trade facilitation and supply chain security. Following a career which has included periods as Transport Economist in a global shipping company, Transport Investment Analyst in a European bank, Head of Strategy and Business Development in two Nordic ports, Head of Port Infrastructure and Investment in a governmental agency, Director of Ports and Maritime Administration, and Senior Port and Transport Logistics Specialist in two international agencies, he has operated for the last five years as an Independent Consultant. He has been involved in around 40 consultancy projects and advisory services in over 32 countries. He has also been active in professional training and capacity building and has designed and delivered over 25 training courses and seminars for the maritime, transport and logistics industries. He is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Transport and Logistics, Director of Logistics- Ports and Maritime at AVCONET, International Advisor to the Supply Chain and Logistics Group, and member and adviser of several other professional and academic associations in the field. He was recently appointed Specialist Port Adviser to the House of Commons. He has published two books and over 30 papers and policy report. He is visiting academic in several universities and research institutions, both in the UK and abroad.

Catherine specialises in transactional work with a particular emphasis on the logistics sector.  Before joining Holman Fenwick Willan, she spent nine years in the logistics sector working for a leading global air freight, ocean freight and contract logistics service provider and a major UK logistics specialist where she was senior counsel.  She has extensive experience in contract drafting and negotiation with major blue chip customers on a pan-European basis.  Catherine has handled commercial and insured disputes and dealt with a number of corporate transactions, including acquisitions and disposal of businesses and multi-jurisdictional joint ventures.  Catherine is bilingual in French and English.


Craig Neame

Craig Neame is a partner in Holman Fenwick & Willan, specialising in shipping, logistics and marine insurance.  He is particularly well known for his expertise in liner shipping, multimodal transport, ports and terminals and project shipments.  As well as litigation and insurance related matters, Craig also handles transactional projects within his areas of specialisation.  He was previously a main board director of a leading freight forwarder where he combined commercial and legal roles.  Craig is a member of the Legal and Insurance Committee of the British International Freight Association and the UK Government's Committee considering whether the UK should adopt the Rotterdam Rules.


Mark Rowbotham

Mark Rowbotham is a former officer of HM Customs & Excise, and established his own Customs Consultancy, PORTCULLIS ISC, in 1999. He advises on Customs & Excise issues, and delivers training courses in all aspects of Customs & Excise Procedures and Management. He is qualified in International Business, Export Management and Statistics, and gained his Masters Degree in 1995. He is also a qualified linguist, fluent in French, Portuguese and Spanish. He has since worked as Customs Analyst in the international logistics sector before becoming an independent Customs & Excise Consultant in 1999. He has had several articles published in international trade magazines and journals on issues concerning Customs & Excise matters, and is a member of several Professional Institutes, including the Customs Practitioners Group.

Nigel Smith is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He qualified with a small firm of accountants before moving to Coopers and Lybrand as a training manager in 1971. In 1982 he set up his own training practice and has specialised in training finance in the Ports Industry since 1983. He currently lectures to large and small businesses and governmental bodies in the UK, Europe, Africa and the Far East. 


Ben Waller

Ben Waller joined Cardiff Business School as a Senior Research Associate in November 2004, with interests in supply chain design and demand management, based within both the Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre and the Lean Enterprise Research Centre. Current interests are examining the successful application of IT systems in supply chain transformation, the use of visual display tools in project management, and strategic collaboration in aftermarket automotive distribution. Prior to this, Ben spent five years with the International Car Distribution Programme (ICDP is worldwide co-operative research programme investigating the future of car distribution and retailing, established in 1992). The first three years were spent as part of the multi-centre research team of the 3DayCar Programme, (which involved ICDP UK and the Universities of Cardiff, Bath and Bologna), enabling build to order strategies. In 2002 Ben worked at Monash University, Melbourne on an ICDP-Australia project, and then followed this with a variety of ICDP-Europe projects, researching finished vehicle logistics and supply strategies, and aftermarket strategy and parts supply chains. Prior to a research career, Ben was at UK retailer Sainsbury's as a commercial analyst.
