Public distance learning courses are either developed under the in-house capability of IBC Academy or we work with expert partners (such as Universities and Industry Associations) to design, develop and run courses. We work closely with universities and colleges to assist them in widening participation to their existing courses or developing new ones that will appeal to working professionals.
IBC Academy is part of Informa plc, the leading international provider of specialist information and services for the academic and scientific, professional and commercial business communities.
Our History
Informa plc was created in December 1998 by the merger of IBC Group plc (International Business Communications Group) and LLP Group plc (Lloyd’s of London Publishing Group).
Distance learning delivery commenced at IBC in the late 1990s, shortly before the merger with LLP, when a UK college approached the company with a plan to offer correspondence courses but didn’t have the funding to invest in content, the route to market or the delivery infrastructure. IBC provided the seed funding and staffing to commercialise the idea and in 1998 the first course in Marine Surveying commenced, closely followed by a course in Port Management.
With the formation of Informa, the fledgling IBC distance learning courses were moved to sit alongside Lloyd’s List Events conferences and seminars as a part of the Lloyd’s Maritime Training Programmes offering. In 2003 following a rebranding, most of the courses became part of the Lloyd’s Maritime Academy.
With the growing success and popularity of the distance learning courses, for individuals as well as companies, some of the original courses were transferred back to IBC Academy in 2008 so that the customer could more easily differentiate the growing oil, gas, energy, trade, logistics and gerneral management courses from our sister Lloyd’s Maritime Academy’s ship focused courses.
